Easiest Ways to Stop a Creaking Door

05/01/2021

Having a door that creaks every time someone opens it can surely drive anyone insane. The squeaky sound is usually made when wood rubs against wood or when there is something wrong with the hinges. A creaking door is a constant reminder that someone either walked in or walked out of the room. It can be very distracting, especially if you are having a busy day. Don’t worry, though; we’ve got your back! If you are fed up with your door’s creak, sit tight because we have just the solution for you.

Lubricate with Oil

Before trying to remove the hinge pin, you should try to lubricate it with oil. You can easily lubricate the hinges without having to remove the entire door. A silicon-based blaster spray is the best for the purpose of coating the hinges. After you’ve done this, check to see if this fixes the problem. If not, you can try any of the other methods listed below.

Grease the Hinge Pin

In order to remove the hinge pin from your door, use a hammer and a nail punch. Place the nail on the bottom of the hinge and tap the nail’s hinge with your hammer. Once the pin has been loosened up, pull it out using the back end of the hammer – you can also use a screwdriver. Use white grease to coat the hinge (this will prevent rusting). The oil will also last longer and will not easily dry out. You can also use cooking oil or motor oil instead of white grease. You can recoat your door hinge several times until to stop the creaks.

Use Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is usually found in candles but is also available in raw form. Raw paraffin wax is white and odourless. This wax is available in small cubes or large slabs. Melt this wax by putting it in a microwave or over a stove until it turns liquid. Be careful, though, as it can easily ignite if overheated. Next, apply this hot wax over the hinge pins and make sure that you cover all parts. Wait until the wax has cooled down a little, and then put it back into the door.

Use Wool to Clean Hinges

If oil or wax does not stop the door from creaking, it probably means that your hinges are not clean. Lubricants don’t usually clean off rust or dirt as well as wool can. Fine steel wool can be used to do this task. Remove all of the dirt and paint (if any) by moving the hinge pin in small circular motions. You can also use regular house cleaning water to remove the stubborn rust or dirt on the hinges. After cleaning the hinges, coat them with a lubricant before placing them back on.
